We're excited to announce the 'Art of the Palestinian Poster' exhibition which brings together contemporary posters, animations, and films. This work is being exhibited in the UK for the second time at the MIAH Foundation Islamic Arts & Heritage Gallery. These artful posters by Palestinian and Arab artists, forged during Israel's bombardment of Gaza, come from the "Posters For Gaza" exhibition shown in Ramallah and Dubai by the Zawyeh Gallery.
Poster art has always played an important role in the history of the struggle for Palestine. During the 1970s and 1980s, Arab and international artists produced posters in an effort to raise global consciousness of the Palestinian cause, under the auspices of the cultural wing of the PLO. This heyday of design, printing, and dissemination took place in part during the Lebanese Civil war and is considered the golden age of the Palestinian poster.
While the themes and emotional tenor of the work may vary from outrage at continuing human rights violations, wanton killing, and destruction to calls for ceasefire, outright grief, even sarcasm - all the artists denounce Israeli crimes and western complicity. Underlining their messages is a much-needed practicality: the proceeds from the sales of these posters go to medical aid for Gazan children through the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
Exhibition entry is FREE; we appreciate donations that go towards our operating costs. Booking is encouraged, however walk-ins are also welcomed.
