Join us at MIAH Gallery for monthly geometry class where we will cover the fundamental principles of geometry and complete a different geometric pattern that is often found in traditional Islamic architecture and decoration.

Our Geometry Club runs on the fourth Saturday of every month. Each session is designed to be self-contained and can be enjoyed as a graded learning project or as a one-off session. There is a total of 10 sessions. Please note that familiarity with a compass is essential and understanding the basics of geometric pattern construction is useful but not essential.

Who is this course for? All levels of ability are welcome. Suitable for adults and children aged 11+ years. All materials are provided.

The sessions will follow the following programme:

  • Week 1: 27/04/24 - A Sixfold Pattern - The Star and the Hexagon: Construction & Tiling

  • Week 2: 25/05/24 - An Eightfold Pattern - The Khatam: Construction & Tiling

  • Week 3:22/06/24 - A Sixfold Pattern - The Star and the Hexagon: Interlacing

  • Week 4: 20/07/24 - An Eightfold Pattern - The Khatam: Five Patterns from One Underlying Grid

  • Week 5: 24/08/24 - A Sixfold Pattern - The Ferozkoh Jaali: Construction & Interlacing

  • Week 6: 28/09/24 - A Sixfold Pattern - The Ferozkoh Jaali: Tiling

  • Week 7: 26/10/24 - TBC

  • Week 8 23/11/24 - TBC

  • Week 9: 28/12/24 - TBC

  • Week 10: 25/01/24 - TBC

NB: The course structure of weeks 1-6 (and weeks 1-10 in the original structure of the course) is based on Samira Mian's online introductory course. During our face-to-face course you will be taught the method's used by Saimra Mian and also the methods used by other geometry artists who have done the same or similar patterns if they use different methods, including Eric Broug, the Global Centre of Islamic Art, Sandy Kurt.

Tickets

We would like to make this workshop as accessible as possible and so have subsidised the price of the tickets. However, we still need to make a small charge for entry to help cover our costs. To guarantee your place, please book your tickets in advance using the link.

Standard Ticket: £10 (+ ticket fees)

Concessions (students, low-income, over 65s): £8 (+ ticket fees)

Book 5 or more sessions and you can get one session for free: create your order and then email us with the date you would like for the extra free session at [email protected] . We will add your name manually to the chosen date and send you confirmation.

Please present proof of concessionary status with your ticket upon arrival, where applicable.

REFUND POLICY: Please note that tickets are only refunded (minus the Eventbrite admin fee) if requested more than 7 days before the event.
