MIAH Foundation is launching a new lecture series on Muslim history, identity, and arts, featuring renowned academic authors and thought-provoking discussions on a range of fascinating topics.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr Fatima Rajina will be our inaugural guest lecturer. Dr Rajina is a Senior Legacy in Action Research Fellow at the Stephen Lawrence Research Centre at De Montfort University. With a background in Islamic Societies and Cultures from SOAS, University of London, she completed her Ph.D. focusing on the Bangladeshi community in the UK, particularly in Tower Hamlets, Luton, and Birmingham.

Dr. Rajina’s latest book, British Bangladeshi Muslims in the East End: The Changing Landscape of Dress and Language, was published in July 2024 by Manchester University Press. In her work, Dr Rajina challenges common perceptions about British Muslims, focusing on how the global war on terror has influenced Muslim men’s sartorial choices and language use, rather than the often-debated topic of Muslim women’s dress. Her research provides a nuanced, critical perspective on identity and political subjectivity among British Bangladeshi Muslims, particularly in the East End of London.

The lecture will take place on 7th December 2023, from 5 PM to 6:30 PM at the MIAH Islamic Arts Gallery in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Dr Rajina during a Q&A session at the end of the talk.

As spaces are limited, all participants must book in advance.

We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be an insightful and engaging session!

Dr Fatima Rajina
