This digital exhibition presents the oral histories of residents of the West Midlands with heritage or history from the Arab world.* It is part of our ‘People, Places, Traces: A Millennium of Arab-British Encounters’ project, which explores more than a millennium of historical exchanges between the British Isles and the Arab world, through a series of talks, a digital exhibition and by collecting oral histories of residents of the West Midlands of Arab heritage.**

The project was commissioned by the Arab British Centre, and we will be sharing our outcomes with them as part of their “Arab Britain’ archive project. This exhibition is accompanied by a book and the oral history interviews will also be deposited at the Library of Birmingham. We are particularly grateful to all our interviewees for their time, interest and support of the project. Most of all we thank them for sharing their experiences and helping us to document their lives.

*The Arab world is defined here as the 22 countries who are members of The Arab League: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

**We are inclusive of all people from or with heritage from these countries and cultures. While for some ‘Arab heritage’ may refer to nationality, for others the reference might be to identity and/or regionality.
