Hasret is a self-taught British Turkish artist living and working in Birmingham. She was born and raised in the Netherlands and then spent her teenage years and early twenties in Turkey. She specialises in Islamic geometric abstract art, taking influences from her own heritage and cultural background as well as across all Islamic lands. Patterns from Islamic art and architecture are deconstructed and drawn by hand with a traditional compass and straight edge, just like the artisans did in the past. She then paints them with handmade watercolours from pigments and shell-gold. Fusing time-honoured and labour-intensive techniques with the modern, she expresses and reinvigorates this tradition in a contemporary and contemplative manner.
She frequently runs workshops at community events, public engagements, galleries, education centres and school project settings as well as public and private commissioned works. Her work has been sold internationally and exhibited across the UK.
